THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE
Our schools and cultures have traditionally emphasized linguistic and logical intelligence, but Dr. Howard Gardner, the founder of Multiple Intelligence theory, proposes a more inclusive approach. According to him, we should value and prioritize individuals with other types of intelligence, such as artists, architects, musicians, naturalists, designers, dancers, therapists, entrepreneurs, and others who contribute to our world. This approach calls for a significant transformation in the way we run our schools. Teachers must present lessons in various ways, including music, cooperative learning, art activities, role-playing, multimedia, field trips, inner reflection, and more, so that every child has the chance to learn in ways that align with their unique minds. At KSER, we use Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence theory to assess our students. According to Gardner, everyone has several types of intelligence that can be developed, as illustrated in the following diagram:
HOW IS MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE (Ml) THEORY DIFFERENT?
Traditional view of intelligence states that people are born with a fixed amount of intelligence while MI theory says human beings have many types of intelligence and each person has a unique combination or profile.
Traditional view of intelligence says intelligence level does not change over a lifetime while Ml theory says we can all improve each of the intelligence. Though some people will improve more readily in one intelligence area than in others Traditional view of intelligence says Intelligence consists of ability in logic and language while Ml theory says there are many more types of intelligence which reflect different ways of interacting
with the world In traditional practice, teachers teach the same material to everyone while Ml theory implies that teachers teach and assess differently based on individual’s intellectual strengths and weaknesses.
We at KSER, strive to adapt the concept of multiple intelligence to assess students’ abilities. Our teachers structure the learning activities around an issue or question and connect subjects. They develop strategies that allow students to demonstrate multiple ways of understanding and valuing their uniqueness. By incorporating this multiple intelligence theory, we have seen significant progress in each child.
